PROTECTING OUR FUTURE” WOMEN LEAD
COMMUNITY INITIATIVES TO PROMOTE ABSTINENCE
AND MUTUAL FIDELITY IN EKITI STATE, NIGERIA

This project focuses on a major objective of the national plan for HIV/AIDS prevention which seeks to promote behavioral changes of the general population (safe sex, abstinence etc) through social communication. The specific objective is to promote values and behavior that will sustain abstinence and being faithful among out of school female youths for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in Ekiti State of Nigeria and the two focal communities are Moba and Ikere local government areas of the state. CHD is working with Ekiti State Coalition for Women’s Rights [EKCWR], a local women’s network which has been nurtured by CHD for many years. Community dialogues and training workshops are being held with community based women’s organizations to impart the leadership skills needed to act as change agents among the local female youth. About 600 out of school girls in the 18-24 age group are receiving peer education and life changing entrepreneurial skills to reinforce abstinence through economic empowerment. The project is for one year beginning July 31,2011.
